CONSERVATION THAT COMMUNITIES UNDERSTAND IS CONSERVATION THAT COMMUNITIES PROTECT.

MKT’s education and awareness work operates across three domains, directly mirroring its conservation priorities. In restoration, MKT raises awareness on the value of forests, teaches practical restoration methods, supports communities to grow and manage tree nurseries, and promotes sustainable farming practices. In protection, MKT builds understanding around forest and wildlife conservation, supports peaceful human-wildlife coexistence, and builds the capacity of CFAs on wildfire response and forest monitoring. In health, MKT links health and environment through community health talks, reproductive health education, menstrual hygiene awareness, and the training of local health champions.

This integrated approach recognises that conservation knowledge does not sit in a box. People who understand why forests matter are more likely to protect them. Communities that are engaged in restoration are more likely to monitor it. Young people who learn about conservation in school grow up to become conservation professionals, CFA leaders, forest rangers and advocates. Education is not a support activity but part of the mission.

Delivering conservation in a practical and engaging way

MKT delivers conservation concepts in practical and engaging formats, employing technology, games, field trips and hands-on lessons. Technology is also used to enhance independent learning and extend reach beyond the classroom into communities.

Meeting institutional needs sustainably

MKT provides schools with sustainable solutions to meet clean water, food, timber and energy needs through water storage and harvesting solutions, woodlots and energy-saving jikos. This reduces the institutional pressure on forest resources that schools would otherwise create.

Building skills and creativity for future conservation leaders

MKT nurtures skills, creativity and innovative thinking in young people to support future career prospects and meaningful contribution to environmental protection. This is delivered through hands-on projects and regular check-ins with students and teachers.

Technology for the next generation

MKT uses technology to enhance the skills of younger generations in an evolving digital world. Digital tools provide seamless monitoring of education activities and course interactions, and give young people skills that are increasingly valuable in conservation and beyond.

JUNIOR RANGER PROGRAMME

The Next Generation Of Forest Guardians

Launched in 2022 and fully aligned with Kenya’s Ministry of Education curriculum, the Junior Ranger Programme is MKT’s flagship school-based conservation education initiative. The programme educates and inspires students in schools surrounding Mount Kenya on the ecology and biodiversity of the mountain, the threats it faces, and the role that every person in the community plays as a current and future guardian of the forest.

We believe that shaping the perception of wildlife and environmental matters in the younger generation is vital. Youth inclusivity is essential to the sustainability of the work we do today and in carrying forth the conservation work we are doing right now.

Our youth conservation education programs  seamlessly integrates engaging pedagogical techniques to deliver a captivating curriculum with digital literacy skills as a value add.
