Lasting conservation is built on strong communities. MKT’s socio-economic development programmes address the root causes of forest pressure (poverty, poor health, limited education and water insecurity ) by investing directly in the wellbeing of the 400,000 people living at Mount Kenya’s forest edge.

When people have access to healthcare, education and basic needs, they are more resilient, more engaged, and more likely to adopt sustainable practices.  The communities who have been most consistently engaged in protecting and restoring the forest are those where MKT has invested longest in health, education and livelihoods.
