The Mount Kenya '10 to 4' is a downhill mountain bike race and fun ride, orgnised by Executive Officer of the Mount Kenya Trust and a small but dedicated committee. The event is held annually to raise funds for local communities and conservation efforts on Mount Kenya. The race begins at the edge of the Mount Kenya National Reserve boundary at an elevation of over 10,000 ft and finishes in dry savannah country below on the Laikipia plains at approximately 4,000 ft. There is now a new event day called the ’10 to 4 Hardcore’ aimed at elite Kenyan cyclists and the very fit and experienced. We particularly welcome overseas entrants to try the new 2-day event.
NEWS FLASH
The 2012 10 to 4 HAS BEEN CANCELLED
This year’s 10 to 4 Mount Kenya Mountain Bike Challenge, scheduled for the 17th/18th of February 2012, has been cancelled, with last year’s title sponsor regrettably withdrawing support for the 2012 event, a consequence of corporate restructuring. Whilst rigorous efforts to attract an alternative title sponsor have been made, support from a somewhat beleaguered business community at such short notice, has not been immediately forthcoming. Sponsors are essential to the success of the 10 to 4 Mountain Bike Challenge.
NEW DATE FOR YOUR DIARY. The next 10 to 4 Mount Kenya Mountain Bike Challenge will now take place on Friday the 22nd and Saturday the 23February 2013.
WHAT NOW? Many cyclists have been looking forward to this year’s 10 to 4 and training hard for this popular and challenging season opener. Under the circumstances and in recognition, the committee hereby announce the 10 to 4 DIY Special, a totally unsupported, hard core cycling experience. A new, yet ever more demanding 4 to 10 to 4 route has been devised and will be ridden on Saturday the 18th of February 2012.
The DIY Special is not for the faint hearted and will be limited to a maximum of 60 cyclists in teams of not less than two cyclists – each team must be entirely responsible for all team members, as no support, neither accommodation, water, food, medical, recovery nor indeed any logistics is being provided.
LOCATION: A new, start/finish DIY campsite is to be ‘tested’ in the Ngare Ndare forest at a GPS location to be provided in advance to participants. Everyone must be 100% self-sufficient! Alternative accommodation can be found in hotels at either Timau or Nanyuki.
CYCLE ROUTE: A demanding, circa 90 kms GPS enabled route up and down the mountain, has been set. At least one member from each team MUST have a GPS, to follow the route.
COST: Whereas the weekend is unsupported, forest community and campsite security fees must be met, consequently the following charges will be collected at the campsite:
Per head camping only Adults KES 1000 Children KES 500
Per cyclist in addition to camping KES 3000 (includes fees for KWS for the Mount Kenya National Reserve and for the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve)
REWARDS: The 10 to 4 DIY Special is not a race, neither are there any prizes. You pit yourself, your buddy and your cycling ability against the mountain.
HOW DO I REGISTER? Email 10to4@mountkenyatrust.org for further information.
THE 10 to 4 FOCUS: The 10 to 4 Mountain Bike Challenge is a Fundraising Initiative of the Mount Kenya Trust. The next five-year fundraising focus for the event will the rehabilitation of part of the Mount Kenya National Reserve. The area has been reclaimed from informal settlement on the mountain. The progress and growth of this initiative will be visibly measureable each year.
Be part of this formidable, environmental recovery.
